Dualities and intertheoretic relations

چکیده
The idea of duality is at the core of the most relevant developments in recent fundamental physics. During the last forty years theoretical physics has used the notion of duality in different ways and frameworks: in the so-called dual resonance model of the late sixties, which gave birth to early string theory; in the context of quantum field theory, where a groundbreaking generalization of electromagnetic duality was conjectured by Claus Montonen and David Olive in 1977; in supersymmetric string theory, where various sorts of dualities are playing a key role in the theoretical elaboration. This paper is concerned with the significance of physical dualities from the viewpoint of philosophy of science. The idea is that, for its peculiarity, this ‘new’ ingredient in theory construction can open unexpected perspectives for the current philosophical reflection on contemporary physics. In particular, dualities represent an unusual type of intertheory relation, the meaning of which deserves to be investigated. It is the aim of the paper to show how discussing this point brings into play, at the same time, what is intended by a ‘theory’ and in which sense dualities are to be considered ‘symmetries’ (if they are).

1 Enriching Philosophical Models of Cross - Scientific Relations : Incorporating Diachronic
1. Introduction: Simple Reduction and Beyond Traditional and New Wave models of reduction in science have not lacked for ambition. Philosophers have presented single models to account for the full range of interesting intertheoretic relations, for scientific progress, and for the unity of science (Nagel, 1961; Oppenheim and Putnam, 1958). Early critics attacked the logical empiricists' proposal...
متن کاملMontague Reduction, Confirmation, and the Syntax-semantics Relation
Intertheoretic relations are an important topic in the philosophy of science. However, since their classical discussion by Ernest Nagel, such relations have mostly been restricted to relations between pairs of theories in the natural sciences. In this paper, we present a model of a new type of intertheoretic relation, called Montague Reduction, which is inspired by Montague’s framework for the ...

1. Introduction The New Wave models of reduction in science incorporate the best insights of both the logical empiricists and their critics. They propose that cases of intertheoretic mapping can fall anywhere along a continuum of possibilities from nearly perfect isomorphs at one end of that continuum (which the logical empiricists tended to stress) to utterly irreconcilable conceptions at the ...

Reduction: Models of Cross-Scientific Relations and Their Implications for the Psychology-Neuroscience Interface Robert N. While opportunities for integration between the cognitive and the neural sciences have increased, most philosophers, appealing to the multiple...
متن کاملConsequences of U dualities for Intersecting Branes in the Universe
We consider N – charge, intersecting brane antibrane configurations in M theory which are smeared uniformly in the common transverse space and may describe our universe. We study the consequences of U dualities and find that they imply relations among the scale factors. We find using Einstein’s equations that U dualities also imply a relation among the density ρ and the pressure pi for the sing...
